What Is The Best On The Web About Malta?

Malta consists of three inhabited islands in a chain in the southern Mediterranean below Sicily and above north Africa. A popular stop for traders throughout history and a strategic location for navies, Malta has seen more than it’s fair share of action and adventure over the centuries. This small site will hopefully help you to understand the island a little more and perhaps even choose to visit it one day.

Maltese Waters

Could Malta be the sunniest country in Europe? Possibly, possibly not, but it is certainly a popular tourist destination with over 1 million people visiting each year.

While there may be only a few sandy beaches, there is a wonderful coastline for water sports enthusiasts. Glorious sunshine and crystal clear aquamarine waters are an attractive draw for even the least confident people in water. Swimming, diving and sailing are all popular in Malta and there are many options to choose from to be the highlight of any holiday.

One great location for a day in the sea is the Blue Lagoon on the island of Comino. A shallow sandy seabed means that light is reflected back through the water rather than absorbed making the water look like those tempting photographs from the Caribbean. The Blue Lagoon is very popular throughout the summer with locals and tourists. The salty water enables swimmers to float along almost effortlessly, while the coastline almost encloses the area making the tides fairly benign. It is a wonderful spot for a family day out – if you don’t mind sharing the experience with others!

Comino is actually a very small island with just a handful of permanent residents and few buildings. This being Malta, it has a small church, a priest and a permanent policeman. During the summer, the population expands by several hundred souls each day, but local rules ensure that the majority have left the island by 6pm.

These wonderful waters make Malta a favourite location for a wide range of people. From those that would like a swim on a once in a lifetime holiday, to those that arrive in their superyachts to enjoy the best the world can offer, it has something for everyone. There are also, of course, the guaranteed experiences of water and wildlife – Malta has it’s own marine park in which it is actually possible to swim with dolphins!

Property In Malta

Such a wide range of visitors has made Malta very popular with foreigners. Combine that with a small island with limited space, a low cost of living and EU membership and there is real demand for residential property for holidays and permanent residence. At the top end of the scale, some of the best Malta apartment can be found on the edge of Sliema at the prestigious Tigne Point development. Many of these luxurious and individual apartments overlook the Valletta skyline (the view at the top of this website) and are considered to be amongst the finest residencies in the country.

There are, of course, many real estate agencies vying for sales of these and other local properties. One of the longest established firms selling property in Malta is Cassar and Cooper, based in both Valletta and St Julians. Another popular seller of properties in Malta is Frank Salt, probably the largest real estate agency on the island. There are many other agencies, perhaps fifty in total, but these are some that we have heard or had positive experiences about.

Government

Malta is member of the European Union, joining in 2004. The country uses the euro as it’s currency. One of the leading Maltese politicians in the EU is currently Vice President of one of the institutions. No mean feat!

Politically, the country is split in two, with a Nationalist and a Labour Party. Elections are won and lost in Malta by a few hundred or a few thousand votes. Though it is not a political organisation, the church also plays a very prominent role in Maltese society.
